Introduction: The Hidden Side of the Race
Planning your trip for the Challenge Salou 2026? If you are traveling to Costa Dorada for this event, you probably have a lot of questions.
in Costa Dorada, you probably have a lot of questions. Official websites are great for rules and maps, but they rarely tell you the reality of the weekend: the massive traffic jams, the fully booked restaurants, and the best places to park.
To give you the ultimate local guide, we sat down with Marc, a Costa Dorada resident and event volunteer. He shares the real “insider secrets” to help families and spectators survive and enjoy this massive event.karim

Aitom Tourism: Hi Marc! A lot of people are still searching online for last-minute registration prices. Is it still possible to join the race?
Marc: Hello! I hate to break the bad news, but here is the hard truth: The event is 100% Sold Out. It officially reached its historical limit of 1,200 athletes back on April 30th. Many people keep refreshing the Official Challenge Salou Pricing Page hoping for a miracle, but there are absolutely no spots left. If you are not registered yet, your best option is to come to Salou, enjoy the sunny weather, and experience the amazing atmosphere as a spectator!

Aitom Tourism: For those coming to watch the main race on Sunday morning, what is the biggest mistake tourists make?
Marc: Driving the wrong way! Tourists always try to use the main coastal road, known as the C-31B. Please, do not do this. The C-31B will be completely closed by the police from 7:45 AM until around 1:30 PM. If you try to take this road, you will be stuck in your car for hours.
- The Local Solution: Use the A-7 Highway to enter Salou from the north side. Park your car far away from the beach (Passeig Jaume I). Walking the last 15 to 20 minutes is much faster than waiting in traffic.

Aitom Tourism: Speaking of parking, where exactly should visitors park their cars to avoid paying high fees?
Marc: Parking near the beach on race day is impossible. Instead of driving around the center, look for the “White Zones” (Zonas Blancas), which are free public parking areas. You can find them in the residential areas towards the north of Salou, or near the Emprius sports area. Alternatively, if you are staying in nearby cities like Reus or Tarragona, leave your car at the hotel and take the local bus using a “Bonobús” card. It’s cheap, drops you near the center, and saves you from the parking nightmare.
Aitom Tourism: Standing outside and cheering makes people very hungry. Where should families eat after the race?
Marc: Tourists naturally go to the restaurants located right on the beach promenade. Locals never do that during big events. Those places are overcrowded, expensive, and the service is extremely slow on race day.
- The Secret Spot: Turn your back to the beach and walk 10 minutes inland towards Calle Barcelona. This is the traditional center of Salou where the local workers eat.
- What to eat: Look for a real “Menú del Día” (Daily Menu) for about €12 to €15. You will get authentic, homemade Catalan food. If you just want a quick snack so you can go back to the race, find a traditional bakery and ask for a “Coca de Recapte” (a local flatbread with roasted vegetables). It costs about €3 and is the best fast food you can find!
Aitom Tourism: What if someone wants a nice, sit-down restaurant experience with their family nearby?
Marc: With 1,200 athletes plus their families, finding an empty table on Sunday at 2:00 PM is almost impossible. The best local restaurants don’t use waiting lists at the door anymore; they require you to book online in advance.

Aitom Tourism: Many visitors are asking about the weather. Is it warm enough to swim in the sea this week?
Marc: The weather in Costa Dorada in early May is tricky. The outside temperature is beautiful, usually around 21°C (70°F) with bright sunshine. It’s perfect for shorts and a t-shirt during the day. However, the Mediterranean Sea is still quite cold right now (around 16°C). The triathletes will definitely wear wetsuits! Bring sunscreen for the day, but don’t forget a light jacket for the evening.
Aitom Tourism: Finally, is there anything else happening besides the main race on Sunday?
Marc: Absolutely! Do not miss the Aquathlon on Saturday at 5:00 PM at Platja de Llevant. It’s a very fast and exciting race. Also, the official Expo opens on Friday evening where you can buy sports gear. If you are bringing children, remember that PortAventura World is just 5 minutes away and usually runs special promotions during this specific sports weekend.
